Begin your journey with a flight or drive from Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar, a beautiful lakeside city on the shores of Lake Tana. Visit the Blue Nile Falls, one of Ethiopia’s most impressive natural attractions, especially powerful during the rainy season. Later, enjoy a boat trip on Lake Tana to explore ancient island monasteries, known for their religious paintings, manuscripts, and peaceful surroundings. Overnight in Bahir Dar.
After breakfast, travel to Gondar, once the capital of the Ethiopian Empire. Upon arrival, explore the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi), a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring medieval castles and palaces built in the 17th century. Continue to Debre Berhan Selassie Church, famous for its beautifully painted ceiling of angel faces. Overnight in Gondar.
Transfer to Lalibela by flight or road, passing through dramatic highland scenery. In the afternoon, begin visiting the first group of Lalibela’s remarkable rock-hewn churches, carved entirely from solid rock in the 12th century. These sacred sites remain active places of worship and represent one of the greatest architectural achievements in the world. Overnight in Lalibela.
After breakfast, visit the remaining rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, including the iconic Church of St. George, carved in the shape of a cross. Learn about the spiritual and historical significance of these UNESCO-listed monuments. In the afternoon, fly or drive back to Addis Ababa, marking the end of the Northern Historical Route.
